Hannah Bingrou Guo (b.2000) is a composer/conductor based in Indianapolis, Indiana. She holds a dual M.M. in Composition and Conducting from Butler University and a B.M. in Composition from Taylor University. Her teachers include Drs. Michael Schelle, Eric Stark, Frank Felice, Reed Spencer, Leon Harshenin, and Jonathan Brooks.
As a composer, her music has been awarded a gold rating and a silver rating in the 2022 IMEA collegiate-level composition competition. Born and raised in Beijing, China, Guo brought with her the unique cultural experience as she began her musical journey in the United States in 2019. She fell in love with and is hugely influenced by the Renaissance and Baroque music as well as the 20th- and 21st-century music. She has a special interest in choral music, both as a conductor and as a choral singer. She composes with the larger community in mind, writing music that speaks to personal struggles, spirituality, relationships, the broken beauty of the world, healing, sacrifice, and reconciliation.
A conductor, Guo was fortunate to know and collaborate with musicians and scholars of the Second Presbyterian Church and Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra to conduct a performance of J.S. Bach's cantata 106 "Actus Tragicus" alongside singers from the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, the Butler choirs, and other local musicians. During the 2025-26 season, she was fortunate to serve as the Conducting Fellow of the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir. She also was the choral department assistant at Butler University and the graduate assistant conductor of Spectra in 2025-26.
A collaborator, Guo works with a variety of ensembles and organizations to premiere her compositions, including Sound Ecologies, Circle City Orchestra, University of Maryland Tactus, JCA Composer's Orchestra, Sunset Syndicate Saxophone Quartet, Taylor University Chorale & Sounds, Taylor University Wind Ensemble, and more. She is looking forward to upcoming collaboration with the Greencastle Flute Choir, Atlas Flute Quartet, and musicians and ensembles in Cincinnati. She has sung new music by her fellow composers, conducted new chamber pieces, and was the graduate assistant of the JCA Composer's Orchestra at Butler University for two years.
She considers her recent biggest achievement to be a successful and meaningful collaboration with her friend, composer/conductor Joshua P. Cuevas, in putting together a new music concert titled "On Grief that Remains" in April, 2026.
Particularly interested in the collaborative process between composers and conductors, Guo has done research on the topic and intends to continue her studies in both areas herself. Starting fall semester, 2026, Hannah will begin her D.M.A in Composition studies at the University of Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music, joining the Cincinnati music communities while continuing her connection in the Indianapolis area.
